Health insurance for french cross-border commuters

Since the agreement on the free movement of people between Switzerland and the EU came into force , the place of work has been the determining factor with regard to health insurance.

Cross-border commuters, who mainly live in France, Germany, Italy or Austria and work in Switzerland, have a choice when it comes to health insurance. They can opt to be insured either in the health insurance system of the country where they live or in Switzerland in accordance with the health insurance act (KVG  - compulsory health insurance). Once the cross-border commuter has chosen a system, he can no longer change to a different health insurance system.

Cross-border commuters from France today have three options for insuring themselves:

  • The compulsory health insurance according to the health insurance act in Switzerland
  • The “Couverture Maladie Universelle” (CMU)
  • A private health insurance with a private company in France

On 1 June 2014 it should no longer be possible to choose a private health insurance in France. But a definitive decision has yet to be made.
